Open day- Sessay Village Hall

Thank you to all who joined us on Saturday 2nd November at the open day to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the village hall’s refurbishment project, it was a good afternoon. Thank you to Heather Dale and the events committee for organising and managing the day, along with those who volunteered to help on the day. Special thanks go to Margaret Watkinson a long term resident of Sessay and a loyal and active supporter of Sessay Village Hall who shared her memories of the inception and development of the hall. Margaret moved into the village in 1965 and contributed to the development of the hall and associated facilities.

The ” muddy fields” as Margaret described was generously donated by a local farmer, John Eden and he along with local residents worked hard to raise the funds to create the facilities we enjoy and are proud of today. The village hall, cricket field, bowling green and play area are owned by Sessay Community Trust and are an integral part of the community. We, the trustees, will strive to protect and develop them for the future generation and in doing so will recommence the hardest part – fundraising for phase two of the project.

Sessay WI

Picture the scene – it’s December 9th 1924
34 ladies walk or cycle in the dark to Sessay School.
There in the schoolroom, lit by oil lamps, they hear the Vicar’s wife introduce Mrs. Hicks, the County Organiser, who explains the history and origins of the WI.
After a little discussion it was proposed and carried unanimously that there should be a Woman’s Institute in Sessay. Here we are today celebrating our Centenary.

1924 – 2024  Congratulations Sessay WI

Christmas Fayre

The Christmas season got off to a fine start with the excellent Christmas Fayre held in the village hall on Saturday, 9th November. Lots of people visited the many stalls full of varied and interesting wares and enjoyed cakes, cuppa, and mulled wine. Some serious fun was enjoyed at the tombola and the Sessay version of ” Play your cards right.”
The total money raised, £844 goes towards the second phase of the refurbishment.
A big thank you goes to the organisers and helpers who made this possible and to the stallholders and everyone who attended.

Thanks to all those who entered our “Guess the Bank Note Number”. 60 numbers were picked raising £60 and the winner announced at the Christmas Fair was Margaret Watkinson with the number 35. Well done Watty!
