We have had a village cricket team here in Sessay since 1850 and like most village teams it prides itself as being at the heart of the local community. The Club’s key focus is to be a central point for people of all ages from Sessay and the surrounding villages to come to the ground, take in a game, make new acquaintances and offer a place to come and play cricket – or just get fit, for all those that want to enjoy cricket.
The club achieved national fame in 1976 when it reached the final of the National Village Knock Out competition, only to lose narrowly to Cornish side Troon. That bitter sweet memory was laid to rest in 2010 when the club finally became National Village Champions when their second visit to HQ saw them record a seven-wicket victory over Oxfordshire’s Shipton under Wychwood. Returning to Lords ‘HQ’ in 2016 to return victorious having beaten Sibton Park CC by 116 runs and again returning the following year in 2017 to fall just short against Reed CC. Sessay are one of only 11 teams from across the UK to have won the trophy on more than one occasion.
The club has three senior teams playing on a Saturday and two women’s senior teams the ‘Sessay Emeralds’ playing on a Sunday. The first XI play in the ECB Yorkshire Premier League North. The second XI play in the York and District Senior League Division one West, and compete against several sides who not so long ago provided the opposition for the first XI. The Third XI, formed in 2008, play in the Nidderdale and District Amateur Cricket League and their steady progress up the divisions now sees them competing in Division Four. The 3rd XI play their home fixtures at our nearby and close friends Thornton Le Moor CC.
Sessay Emeralds are the reigning Yorkshire Women’s League Champions and reached the Kia Summer Smash T10 Final at the Oval in 2019 and the ECB Vitality T20 Knockout in 2021. The Club is a satellite club for Women and Girls’ cricket in North Yorkshire. Going from strength to strength, the Emeralds now has two senior women’s teams playing on a Sunday as well as teams at U19, U17, U16 and U13 both playing locally and in national competitions.
The club also has a thriving junior section with over 120 members, with teams of boys and girls at U15, U13, U11 and U9 age groups. Training for juniors takes place on Friday evenings with each section having a dedicated qualified coach. The Club also run the ECB Dynamos and ECB AllStars cricket on a Friday evening alongside junior training.
As well as the cricket itself, the club offers a thriving social calendar with regular get togethers throughout the closed season, which also sees a newly formed football team – Sessay CC FC – and a darts section taking their place in local leagues. Friday is a truly vibrant evening at the club with well over 100 families down enjoying the evening and taking in the Bar which is open from 6.00pm until around 9.00 depending on the weather. The Club bar at Sessay is also open from mid-day on first XI match days.
The club extends a warm welcome to all – so come along and take in a game, with the bar offering a range of drinks including teas and coffees.
